Position Description:
The Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin is a statewide, volunteer-driven non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the lives of individuals with Down syndrome and their families through awareness, education, information, programs, services, and the exchange of ideas and experiences.
DSAW provides programs and services throughout the lifespan (Parents’ First Call for new and expectant parents, children’s services, adult services, vocational services, and aging services), as well as educational opportunities and events.
DSAW has partnered with Nicolet High School to provide community-based transition services to students enrolled in the Nicolet Community Enrichment Program, ages 18-21. The Nicolet Community Enrichment (NCE) is offered to students between the ages of 18 and 21 who have met the graduation requirements of Nicolet High School. Students focus on maximizing independence in daily living tasks, community participation skills, and employment skills. The Program Assistant (PA) will be one of our staff on the ground at Nicolet High School in their transition program. The PA will work directly with the Nicolet Special Education department to transition students from high school to adult services, collaborating with a special educator to provide instruction. The PA position follows the Nicolet school calendar year, with a start date of August 20, 2024, and an end date of June 13, 2025. There is a potential for summer hours during our DSAW summer programming.
This position will be a combination of classroom and community-based learning. The Program Assistant is not required to create and establish the teaching curriculum, but will support the lead classroom teacher in delivering the material. The PA will provide job coaching in some circumstances. The PA should show leadership qualities and be able to lead small groups in activities both in the classroom and in the community, and should possess a “think outside the box” mentality when it comes to teaching critical independence
skills. The PA will be highly optimistic, energetic, and passionate about helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities achieve extraordinary lives.

The DSAW Program Assistant will assist the licensed teacher by:
- Independently supporting small group instruction under the direction of Nicolet staff or DSAW staff, aligned with the expectations of the licensed teacher.
- Implementing daily schedules.
- Implementing classroom curriculum to support students in mastering targeted learning objectives and IEP goals.
- Assisting with the collection of student data on progress toward IEP goals.
- Developing effective rapport with students and preventing behavior problems by consistently implementing student behavior plans and using strategies that reinforce positive student behavior.
- Finding ways to enhance student learning based on need.
- Supporting and reinforcing students' learning within community settings.
- Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with existing business partners within the community.
- Determining additional ways for NCE students to become more involved within the community, and sharing those contacts and ideas with the team, so connections can be established.
The DSAW Program Assistant is expected to:
- Be on time to work and maintain focus on job tasks throughout the day.
- Dress in a professional manner to positively represent both Nicolet High School and DSAW.
- Respectfully communicate and interact with all staff, and to collaborate with staff to work together as a team.
- Meet district criteria for driving students in a school van. Staff will need to complete a physical with their doctor and provide the district with a copy of their driver’s license.
- Assist with personal care as needed.
Education/Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent
- 1-3 years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred
- Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and an insured vehicle
- Applicants must pass a background check that meets the requirements of the State of Wisconsin.

- Must be a sensitive and mature individual who can relate well to transition-age youth
- Demonstrates warmth, insight, interest, and respect for persons with disabilities
- Able and knowledgeable to cope with emergency situations or behavioral situations in a calm and effective manner
- Must be outgoing and comfortable networking and making connections in the community
- Able and willing to be a team player and to work cooperatively with the transition team
- Able to handle multiple projects at once and work independently to meet deadlines
