Position Description:
The Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin is a statewide, volunteer-driven non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the lives of individuals with Down syndrome and their families through awareness, education, information, programs, services, and exchanging ideas and experiences.
 
DSAW provides programs and services throughout the lifespan (Parent’s First Call for new and expectant parents, children’s services, adult services, vocational services, and aging services), as well as educational opportunities and events.
 
This is a part-time position for the summer, focusing primarily on summer programming for children ages 8-17, and may include some work with adults. This position will support participants in a combination of classroom and community-based learning. The Program Assistant (PA) is not required to create and establish the curriculum but will support the lead Instructor in delivering the material. The PA should show leadership qualities and be able to lead small groups in activities both in the classroom and in the community. The PA should possess a “think outside the box” mentality when teaching critical independence skills. The PA will be highly positive, energetic, and passionate about helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities achieve extraordinary lives and have summer fun!

The DSAW Program Assistant will assist the lead Instructor by:
  • Independently or jointly supporting summer programming under the direction of the lead Instructor.
  • Implementing daily schedules and activities.
  • Developing effective rapport with students and preventing behavior problems by consistently using strategies that reinforce positive behavior.
The DSAW Program Assistant is expected to:
  • Be on time to work and focus on job tasks throughout the day.
  • Dress professionally according to DSAW’s dress code.
  • Respectfully communicate and interact with all staff, and collaborate with staff to work together as a team.
  • Assist with personal care as needed. (DSAW staff occasionally provide light assistance in the bathroom or assistance at mealtimes).
 
Education/Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred
  • Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and insured vehicle
  • Applicants must pass a background check that meets State of Wisconsin requirements
 
Interpersonal
  • Must be a sensitive and mature individual who can relate well to children, youth, and adults
  • Demonstrates warmth, insight, interest, and respect for persons with disabilities
  • Able and knowledgeable to cope with emergency situations or behavioral situations in a calm and effective manner
  • Able and willing to be a team player and to work cooperatively with co-workers
  • Conveys a fun, cheerful demeanor when interacting with children, youth, and adults
