Philosophy
The Yellow School Bus Driver at Brookfield Academy should ascribe to the Statement of School Philosophy and be comfortable with such Academy watchwords as the Five Stars, the Academy Triangle, and Classical Education. He/She should recognize that the Academy is a private independent school for both practical and philosophical reasons, and that private education is seen here as an ideal, as well as a means to an end. There should be a belief in the value of substantive learning and in the school's academic mission, as well as concurrence with the broader philosophical stance identified in the Mission Statement.
Overall Objective
The Bus Driver is part of a pool of available drivers to carry out transportation, as needed, for the school. The Bus Driver works closely with the Upper School Assistant Head and Upper School Athletic Department. The Bus Driver transports students, adhering to all safety rules. The ability to work cooperatively and efficiently with school faculty, staff, administration, parents, and volunteers is essential.
Qualifications
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
Clean driving record and background check
Compliance with state and federal medical examination requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, this person must be able to achieve each essential duty satisfactorily. The following list is not all inclusive and may be expanded from time to time to include other duties and responsibilities as the administration may deem necessary.
Key Responsibilities
Operate a school bus in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to all traffic laws and regulations
Follow designated routes and schedules while adjusting to traffic or weather conditions as needed
Student Transportation (Daily):
Safely transport students to school daily in the morning, ensuring that all passengers adhere to safety rules and guidelines
Athletic Transportation (On call):
Provide transportation for student athletes for athletic contests as needed ensuring timely arrival and departure
Field Trip Transportation (On call):
Provide transportation for students to extracurricular activities, field trips, and events as needed, ensuring timely arrival and departure
Student Safety
Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus, including checking brakes, tires, lights, and other safety equipment
Enforce rules of conduct on the bus to ensure the safety of all passengers
Assist passengers as needed, including helping young students board and exit the bus
Communication
Maintain clear communication with school administrators, parents, and supervisors regarding delays, incidents, or concerns
Report any mechanical issues or safety concerns to the appropriate personnel promptly
Record Keeping
Maintain accurate records, including route logs, maintenance checklists, and incident reports
Track attendance and ensure only authorized individuals board the bus
Emergency Preparedness
Complete evacuation drills as required by local, state, and/or federal law
Be familiar with and execute emergency evacuation procedures when necessary
Respond calmly and effectively in emergencies, providing assistance to passengers
Skills
Strong focus on safety and attention to detail
Excellent time management and reliability
Patience and the ability to work well with children of all ages
